hwitaekswelcome to gayjinho's pentagon fic rec list - please take a walk with me. this list is by no means exhaustive, the tag has grown a lot this past year, and i am purposely excluding all DS9 and adjacent works because i'm kind of assuming if you're here and care about my fic opinions you've probably already read them. so without further ado, and in no particular order, the list:

summary: if you asked wooseok how it started, he wouldn’t be able to tell you. all he could say is that they had performed exactly three shows, each at a venue darker and hotter and smokier than the last, before shinwon had pushed him up against the wall of the graffiti-lined bathroom in the back of the third venue and kissed him for the first time, open-mouthed and wet.
(or: wooseok and shinwon take a road trip up and down the west coast and learn a lot)
my thoughts: first of all i love shinwooseok, i love their dynamic, it's one of my favorite ptg pairings personally and i LOVE a good band au so getting both of those things together? chefs kiss 😘👌 this one is so fun and imbued with so much personality and yearning and shinwon has tattoos

He bumps their knees together. "I'm always here, though," he says.
"I know, but…" Hyunggu pauses. "I like it when it's just the two of us."
my thoughts: ao3 user owl_light is genuinely one of my favorite authors and i have read literally all their works even though i do not know who half the people they write about are beyond a vague name recognition uh so that's my glowing endorsement - in terms of this fic in particular the hyunggu characterization is so strong and hui/hyunggu is another one of my favorite pairings and it genuinely drives me nuts that the tag for it is so small maybe that's my villain origin story

my thoughts: straight up there's not enough poly maknae line fic and that's a crime but this one fills the void in a very sweet way. it's funny and cute and charming and yes second appearance of ao3 user whomstisthis. if you like maknae line, you will love this.
bad habits - kinos

The thing was that even when they were together, it felt like there was a distance between them; a trench that caught the three of them by surprise, shallow enough to cross but unexpectedly difficult to attempt.
Why can't we have everything? Why are we so greedy as to want everything?
my thoughts: this takes place during the shitshow of 2018 so understandably not everyone's thing but uh as someone with a vested interest in the bbb and idolverse content in general...this really hit the spot for me. it IS technically unfinished but i think worth reading anyway and totally functional as a standalone.

summary: Hongseok is just playing the 'good friend' position, really. He just helps out whenever Jinho catches somebody's eye and they come on too strong, carefully guiding (guarding) his small body as they remove themselves from the situation at hand.

my thoughts: alright not to call ao3 user hyojong out but this one was clearly originally written as a larry fic, jinho has one of harry's tattoos, hongseok has blue eyes.......that being said it's fake dating of the "i'm pretending to be your boyfriend when you don't want other guys to bother you" variety and it is delicious and i was a larrie in my day so like no judgement from me

my thoughts: hellOOOOOOOOO shinwon character study!!!! i feel like no one ever wants to talk about this one with me but like y'all i don't know shit about baseball, minor league or otherwise, and this is still one of my favorite and most reread ptg fics. i love the characterization, i love this shinwon. y'all may or may not have noticed that most of my ptg fic is from shinwon's pov and i just.....this is critical reading in my opinion.

my thoughts: alright last but certainly not least - this is THE huidawn fic, it just is. y'all already know how i feel about idolverse and this fic just delivers on literally everything i could possibly have asked for. it is always one of the first ones i recommend when getting friends into ptg and if you have not read it yet i frankly don't know what you're doing with your time. everyone is handled so tenderly in this, even in all their faults, and it is just real fuckin' good.
